Takamori's Daughter

York Wilson Paintings on the Poetry of Hagiwara Sakutaro

One sit, two sit, three sit, four sit!
Go, make a bridge and lean
Over its rail to watch that girl
Of six - or seventeen
Whose one hand holds five incense-sticks,
The other a bouquet.
“Hello girl! To what far place
Now hasten you away?”

“I am the daughter of Takamori
From Kagoshima in Kyushu,
I am the daughter of Takamori
Who did as it was right to do
And, on the battlefield, killed himself.
His tomb demands my prayer
For the ghost of Saigo Takamori
Floating through the air.
