History of Medicine
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Thunder Bay, Ontario
History of Medicine, 68" x 28', was originally designed for and installed in
the main entrance of the Port Arthur hospital. The mural was more figurative
than York's usual abstract painting. In it York Wilson addressed
themes related to ideas, superstitions, and treatments for both
mental and physical health. He painted many references from the
earliest know medicine such as medical plants and herbs, ritual
masks and an Egyptian mummy to present day medical technology ranging
from the thermometer, through X-rays and bacteria. The mural was removed from the old medical facility and
is to grace the recently-completed Regional Health Sciences Centre
Night and Day
Night and Day, 7' x 12', a smaller abstract mural,
intended for the side corridor from which people could only turn right.
York Wilson felt that people tend to turn towards the direction
of lighter colours, thus the mural was painted with darker tones
on the left and bright yellowish orange on the right. It was removed from the hospital
in 1997 and is now situated in the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
